Connecting gardens, groups and growers to create a more resilient food future in Darebin

A new community garden for Reservoir!

We are excited to announce that a new community garden is being developed in the rear garden of The Regent Centre in Reservoir.

The Regent Community Garden aims to create a welcoming shared space where the community can grow fresh nutritious food, learn gardening skills, socialise and connect with their neighbours.

The initiative is being driven by a group of committed and enthusiastic local residents, led by two graduates of Darebin’s Community Leaders in Sustainability program. With plans for a border of fruit trees, 2 raised beds and 4 wicking beds, composting bays, water tanks and a shed for storing tools and equipment, the group’s passion and hard work is helping to transform an under-utilised courtyard into a thriving and productive edible garden. The garden and wicking beds will enable the group to hold educational workshops and events.

The group received a $3,000 Darebin Small Community Grant to fund the garden establishment costs and a $2,500 Darebin Recovery Grant which will be used to run workshops. They also were successfully awarded a grant from Yarra Valley Water for a large water tank and water efficient tapware in the Centre. Donations from Bunnings helped provide materials to build the wicking beds and a community Seed Library will be installed soon.

The garden will be open every Sunday for communal gardening sessions. To get involved please visit the Friends of Regent Community Garden Facebook page or email friendsofregent@gmail.com.
