Connecting gardens, groups and growers to create a more resilient food future in Darebin

Celebrating all things compost for ICAW 2022!

This week is International Compost Awareness Week (1-7 May), a great time of year to share the many benefits of composting our food scraps and using compost to build healthy soils.  This year’s theme is Better Soil, Better Life, Better Future.

Free compost for community gardens

To celebrate ICAW, Darebin Council is providing free compost to it’s local community gardens, to feed their soil and help their veggies flourish! The compost is generously donated by Veolia and created by using food scraps that YOU put in your food and green waste bin. If you’re a community garden in Darebin in need of compost, contact environment.support@darebin.vic.gov.au.

Compost and Worm Farm workshop at Regent Community Garden (Sun 15 May)

Want to learn how to look after your own compost system and worm farm at home? Regent Community Garden is hosting a free Composting and Worm Farm workshop on Sunday 15 May, 1:30-3:00pm. Afternoon tea provided. Free but registrations essential. Book here

Looking for free coffee grounds for your home compost?

DAREBIN’S ‘CAFÉ TO GARDEN’ PROGRAM

enables gardeners and composters to pick up free coffee grounds from participating Darebin businesses for home composting and worm farms. Some of these cafés also offer coffee husks and hessian bags. Check out the full list of participating cafes.

REGROUND BULK COFFEE GROUNDS

Alphington-based social enterprise Reground collect ground coffee and chaff from businesses, diverting this resource from landfill to give it new life in the community. The minimum drop-off amount is 800kg, which is roughly 1.2 cubic metres, and will be delivered straight to your front yard. If that sounds like a lot, don’t worry! Ground coffee can be used over many months without going bad or losing any of its benefits. Register for a free bulk coffee ground delivery here
