#GiveFlakeABreak campaign

The Australian Marine Conservation Society is asking seafood lovers to take the pledge to #GiveFlakeABreak this summer.

‘Flake’ should only refer to shark meat from gummy and rig sharks which aren’t endangered. But in Australia, there’s no legal obligation to label shark meat with the name of the species or where it’s from. Quirks in Australia’s national environmental laws also permit the harvest of endangered sharks.

So when you buy ‘flake’ from your local fish and chip shop, you may not be eating what you think you are.

The campaign is urging people to choose a sustainable alternative and that recommends people use their sustainable seafood guide GoodFish to make their choices.
