Love your leftovers challenge week 3: Get ready to transform your leftover bread 🍞

Bread is one of the top 6 items of food with the highest waste volume in Victoria, and the third highest contributor to climate change, after dairy and meat. For every loaf we eat, half a loaf is thrown away.

You can also use stale bread to make delicious desserts. Here are some ideas:

Reusing bread crusts 🥪

If you have picky eaters at home who prefer not to have crusts on their sandwiches, don’t throw them away. Repurpose those crusts into:

  • Bread crumb coating. Simply grind the bread crusts in a food processor until they are fine crumbs, then use them to coat your favourite foods.
  • Easy, crunchy croutons. Place squares of leftover crust in a frying pan and drizzle with oil, then fry over gentle heat until croutons are crisp.
